Blogger’s Block

I haven’t been blogging much lately. It’s not because I don’t have much to blog about, or even because I don’t have much time. I do have time, at least after my baby goes to sleep. I am sure I could manage at least a couple of entries a week if I wanted.

The truth is, I find it hard to fill my mind with anything other than facts about my child. Now I see how so many blogs turn into mommy blogs.

A lot of extremely interesting things have happened lately. Like Putin’s trip to the U.S. Rahim’s new name laws and the deterioration of the security situation in Afghanistan. I learned to make qurutob and shakarob and plov (osh).

But since I spend most of my time thinking about my daughter’s newfound propensity to pull herself up on anything- the walls, our knees, the furniture- I just can’t be bothered to analyze or record anything else. Why discuss the fact that it costs more to repair a sewing machine than it does a satellite dish in this country when I could take pictures of my precious little girl and upload them to Flickr (and organize them in a gazillion ways because I could just look at them all day long)?

Young Husband from The Coming Anarchy helped me put my blog in a new format, and it’s getting all pimped up for you folks to see. I’m hoping that once I get a new outside, my inside will change too. This is unrealistic and shallow, I know, but it’s a habit I developed in the sixth grade and haven’t been able to shake it.

  1. Well, I definitely hope the new format will cure the bloggers block!!

  2. Great minds think alike.

I have the same issue with my blog - although it may have to do with being confined 24/7.

You’ll get past it. If you don’t, tell us about baby, and we’ll love you anyway.

  3. I’m okay with it being a baby blog. She’s a cutie (nomekhuda) and I enjoyed the flickr album…

  4. Shannon- Me too.

Beaver- That reminds me… must visit your blog. Confined 24/7? Where could that be?

HIK- I would just feel silly. One more woman telling you that baby is gassy lately, it might be teething, but on the positive side she sounds like she’s almost ready to say “dada”? I mean does anyone ever read that?

  5. Nah, I don’t think you should feel silly. It will still be interesting comparing the differences between Tajikistan and the US (did you potty train Mimi-gak w/o diapers, as you mentioned earlier?). Also, you always have a unique insight. I think women downplay the importance of stories about their lives, when our lives move out of the ‘work/political’ context.

Most blogs aren’t inherently captivating. It’s the writing style & insight that draws me in. Hell, I’ve read other expat blogs about their drinking/partying & etc and as fun as it may be for them - what keeps me reading is their interesting spin on things.

My guess is that motherhood is MUCH more interesting than the typical expat scene. Sure, there are those who go on and on about what their 52 month old child did (I don’t get the counting in months after they hit a year old), but even if you do that (as you may, since she’s a cutie, M’A), I am sure it’ll be quite readable.

And if you put up a picture of Mimi in sunglasses…

  6. HiK- I think people count in months until the child is potty-trained, otherwise it sounds silly.

Mimijon still doesn’t have any sunglasses. I will have to work on that.

And Mimi wore cloth diapers until 6 months, but she also went to the potty. It was just easier to change the cloth diaper than clothes. But now she is diaper-free except if we go out. Then she has a diaper, just in case. Though… for some reason, she never has accidents when we aren’t at home.

  7. I always enjoyed your blog so there is no reason to stop now. If facts about your baby are the only thing in your mind you could give them to interested readers from a unique Tajik perspective… I am sure it would draw attention.

  8. $ylon- Thanks for posting. You have an interesting blog there… perhaps that’s another blogroll I need to get going.

  9. Thanks Elizabeth,

Trying to build some awareness about Tajikistan. Usually when I meet people they get it all wrong. They mix the country with Kazakhstan (aka Boratistan) or with Uzbakiston. So doing my little thing I thought could help. Thanks for your comments!

  11. Elizabeth, I don’t know when you’re going to unveil the new blog, but I stumbled upon a neat blog possibility for your blogroll. The blog is in French but it’s a Congolese man who, from what I gather (possibly falsely),is working w/ an NGO. He posts pretty cool pictures and stories.

  12. Your baby comes first, but I hope you will still be keeping up posting. Your Little One can still be the main theme of your posts, just as this other fine blog has: http://loveletterstolittlebear.blogspot.com/.
