Were You Born in a Barn?

I have long wondered what the Russian equivalent for “WERE YOU BORN IN A BARN? SHUT THE FREAKIN’ DOOR!” is. Well today, it was written (in black permanent marker) on the doors to the entrance to my very own pod’yezd! It is:

“ZAKROYTE DVERI ZA SEBYA! VY CHTO, RODILIS V LIFTE?”

(Shut the door after yourself! Were you born in an elevator?)

If only I’d learned that when I worked in an office where we had to all chip in for the air conditioner.

  3. Why an elevator? I see the reason of a barn…but what if the mother lived on like the 20th floor of a late Soviet Dom and wanted to head to the the maternity hospital, but had to wait forever for the lift to reach her…or better yet, it was out of service and by time it got to her, the baby just needed to get out.

    I’m just saying…

  4. The doors open for you in an elevator. So you wouldn’t think to close them.

  6. If I may: “zakroy za soboy” (not “za sebja”). Aftermath of commonwealth, I guess is the reason for such attitude. “Common or public” has become synonimus with “nobody’s”.

  7. The actor Jack Lemmon *was* born in an elevator.
